Eleazar “Yogi” Garcia, Jr., a beloved figure in the Raymondville community, passed away peacefully on November 12, 2024, surrounded by his loving family at the age of 64. Born on October 25, 1960, Yogi was a devoted husband, a cherished father, a loyal brother, and a dedicated public servant.
A 1978 graduate of Raymondville High School, Yogi earned an accounting degree from the University of Texas at Austin. He remained a lifelong Longhorn fan.
Yogi’s passion for his hometown was evident in his career. He proudly served as City Manager of Raymondville and County Auditor for Willacy County. Throughout his decades of service, he was a passionate leader and champion for Raymondville, leaving an enduring mark on the city. His contributions can be seen throughout Raymondville, from parks to city infrastructure to community initiatives.
A loyal Raymondville Bearkat, Yogi cheered for the “blue and gold” on Friday nights and at athletic events throughout his life with unwavering enthusiasm, rain or shine. He also dedicated his time to coaching little league baseball and peewee football, inspiring young athletes for several generations.
Yogi is survived by his loving wife, Nida; his cherished children, A.J., Jake, and Nicole; his sisters, Ida (Ramon) Gomez and Janie (Mark) Ball; his beloved dog, Chico; his uncle Ernesto Garcia and aunt Linda Alfonzo; and numerous extended family members and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, Eleazar and Gloria Garcia.
Viewing will be held on Sunday, November 17, 2024, from 3 p.m. until 5 p.m. at Good Shepherd Funeral Home with a holy rosary at 6:30 p.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Funeral mass will be held on Monday, November 18, 2024, at 10 a.m. at Our Lady of Guadalupe Catholic Church. Interment will follow to his final place of rest at the Tres Norias Cemetery.
Yogi’s legacy will be remembered for his unwavering commitment to family, community, and the profound impact he made on countless lives. He will be deeply missed.
