It is with heavy hearts we announce the death of Jimmy Allen Herring, 80 who left this earth to be with his Lord and Savior on June 19, 2024. He was born to Floyd Herring and Jessilee Gillit Herring on July 5, 1943. He attended school in Lyford and married his high school sweetheart Betty Jean Peeples in 1963. They were blessed with 57 years together.
He was preceded in death by his Parents, brothers Billy Herman and Floyd “Red” Jr, sister Betty Marie, his wife Betty Peeples Herring and his granddaughter Regan Nicole Tate.
He is survived and greatly missed by his daughter, Susan Herring-Tate, his grandchildren and great grandchildren to whom he gave affectionate nicknames - Christina “ Giggle box ”(James) Dunn and Winston “Mini Me” Tate, Jude “Judemo” Dunn, Leighton “Hotrod” Hunt (Ed), Saoirse “Little Miss” Dunn, several nephews , a niece, many Golf and hunting buddies and high school friends – know that he loved you all and cherished your friendships.
Jimmy was a lifelong cotton and grain farmer in Willacy County and will be remembered in Sebastian for the large garden he planted every year and shared with others.
He was an avid outdoorsman well known for his ability to track deer and bow hunt. During his hunting years he won the Texas Big Game Award 92-93 season and was featured in the Texas Journal of Trophy Hunters in May/June 1993. He also placed 2nd in the 1990-1991 Muy Grande World’s Largest Deer contact with a Highest scoring Boone and Crocket Typical Deer.
When he was not hunting Jimmy could be found at Bryson’s Garage in Sebastian with his good friend and best mechanic Mike Bass, working on his race car “The Biscuit”. Together they built a formidable winning race car that Jimmy raced on Saturdays at the Edinburg Speedway. Jimmy was a skilled dirt bike rider who enjoyed riding the fields and dunes of Boca Chica Beach with friends or fishing in his shallow water boat. In his later retirement years, he enjoyed playing golf several days a week at the Raymondville Golf course, always working on perfecting his game. He was a voracious reader and weekly visitor at the Raymondville Memorial Library where he checked out and read 4-5 books per week for many years. His granddaughter Christina built and operated a Little free public Library in Odessa, Texas in his honor- Jimmy’s Free Little Library Wagon.
Jimmy was known as a kind, patient soft-spoken father figure who put his family first. He will be remembered lovingly by his family and close friends for his colorful character and “Jimmyisms” as well as his wonderful sense of humor.
A Memorial Celebration of his life will be held on August 3rd, 2024, at 10 am in the Bethel Lutheran Church in Lyford, Texas.
