Captain Robert Hamel Sanders was born on November 29, 1944, in Austin, Texas and passed away on October 23, 2023, at the age of 78. Robert, known by his closest friends as “The Captain”, is remembered as an avid sportsman and outdoorsman who definitely lived life his way and on his terms. Robert was strong-willed and a little rough around the edges to say the least, but had such a kind and generous soul. Anyone who knows him can recall a story that will leave you laughing and most likely shaking your head in disbelief. As his best friend Timmy Medine would say, “You can’t make this stuff up.”
Captain Sanders served two tours in Vietnam as Captain in the 101st Airborne Division. He was a retired Superintendent for Industrial Specialist Inc. In retirement he enjoyed being a fishing and hunting guide. He and his beloved bird dogs hosted an annual Labor Day White Wing Dove hunt that friends and family enjoyed for over 20 years. This tradition will continue in his memory. Robert was surrounded by good friends that became his family while living in Port Mansfield, Texas. He is preceded in death by his Father Hamel Sanders, Mother Mary Beth Sanders, and a Nephew Kenneth Franks. He is survived by two sisters Sandra (Byron) Sadler, and Kay (Don) Nelson, a nephew Curtis (Amber) Franks, and numerous great nieces, nephews, and cousins. Memorial Services will be held in Port Mansfield, Texas on Wednesday, November 1, 2023, at 10:00 AM at the Port Mansfield Baptist Church. There will also be a Memorial Service in Bowie, Texas at a date and time to be determined. Robert’s family would like to give a very special thanks to the entire Port Mansfield community and everyone who did so much for him over the years. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to ASPCA, The Audubon Society, The Sierra Club, or any other charity of your choice.
Funeral arrangements were entrusted to the caring hands of Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 1157 W. Hidalgo Ave., Raymondville, TX 78580.
