Our mother Sylvia Hinojosa, age 92, passed away at her home on Tuesday, December 5, surrounded by her loving family and friends.
Sylvia was born in Ciudad Victoria, Mexico, on August 24, 1931, to Refugio Carranco and Maria Morales and migrated to the United States in 1946. She married Pablo Hinojosa in 1948 and moved to the community of Santa Monica on the outskirts of Lyford. She dedicated her life to her family, raising nine children while overseeing the household.
She was also a devout and active member of the Santa Monica Catholic Church of Lyford. The holiday season was always her favorite, and she especially enjoyed participating in las posadas.
Throughout her life, Sylvia was the gravitational center of the family and loved to be surrounded by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren. No one will ever forget the mischievous twinkle in her eyes or the stare that could stop you in your tracks. And all can attest to the laughter and sense of humor that made her unique.
She expressed joy and love through the wonderful food she prepared for her family and friends. This legacy includes the countless dishes she perfected throughout the years. We will always remember her homemade tamales, roast beef, flour tortillas, carne guisada, bean tacos, caldo de res, and, not least, the Mexican rice which no one has been able to match.
Mom gave and received so much kindness and love during her life, and we want to thank those who treated her with the same compassion. We want to extend a special thank you to her caregiver, Lety Bingham, who won Mom’s heart, took her on many adventures, and will always be part of the family. We were blessed to have Janeida Hernandez care for mom in her final months, and who brought so much humor and joy.
We couldn’t have hoped for a better team than Dr. Eduardo Uribe, the nurses, and staff at Valley Baptist Family Practice Residency. Their guidance and care kept her strong to the end.
She is survived by her children, Pablo (Sylvia) Hinojosa, Josie (Robert) Centilli, Blanca (Raul) Guerra, Eduardo "Wally" Hinojosa, Florinda (Sonny) Correa, Mike (Annette) Hinojosa, Frances (Mike) Silguero, Roberto (Warren) Hinojosa, Martha (David) Hinojosa, grandchildren: Sandra Vera, Michael P. Hinojosa, Robby Centilli, Joshua Centilli, Paul Centilli, Hope Dunlap, Laura Maino, Claire Guerra, Sarah Guerra, Kristen Guerra, Jon Hinojosa, Janessa Hinojosa, Isaiah Correa, Chase Hinojosa, Celina Tharp, Samantha Silguero, Irene Jones, Cecili Guerra, Alexis Jarrett, Shelbi Jarrett and thirteen great grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Pablo Hinojosa, her sister, Guadalupe Carranco-Perez, brothers Refugio Carranco and Juan Carranco.
Visitation for family and friends will be held on Friday, December 8, 2023, from 1 P.M. until 9 P.M. with a rosary at 7 P.M. at Good Shepherd Funeral Home. All services will conclude at 9 P.M.
Private interment for the family will be scheduled at a later date.
Funeral arrangements have been entrusted to the caring hands of Good Shepherd Funeral Home, 1157 W. Hidalgo Ave., Raymondville, Texas 78580.
